I've been teaching scrapbooking for a long time now and one of the best classes that I've taught is the sketch class. I think sketch classes are so popular as it's a way of scrapbooking where you get to totally enjoy the process as most of the decisions are made for you (such as photo sizes, placement, number of papers used etc).
I want to share my process behind preparing a layout sketch. Just in case you were wondering . . .
It all starts with inspiration. It can come from anywhere but lately I'm finding a lot of inspiration for my scrapbook layouts from card magazines. Weird?
As soon as I saw this in the latest Cards magazine, I knew it would be one of my August sketches.
And there's my starting point - a layout with a collage of four square photos in the bottom right corner, on a cardstock background with some stamping detail.
The next thing I do is peruse my bookmarked or saved layouts from magazines, blogs or online galleries and look for any other small details I can incorporate. I do try to include a technique or idea on each sketch layout that might be new to my class attendees.
I was remembering how much I likes layouts by Sasha Farina lately and in particular the look of kraft cardstock with a border of patterned paper so I thought I'd incorporate that into this sketch layout too.
Here's the finished layout:
Different from the card but you can kind of see how it's based on it.
I do like to use new stuff pretty quickly also. On this layout I broke in some new letter stickers from Sassafrass, paper from Echo Park and my beloved new doily stamp from the previous post.
Once I finish the layout, I then create the sketch based upon the layout. The sketch, layout and materials list are all compiled on a colour handout for the class!
If you live local to Brisbane/Morayfield, you can attend one of my monthly sketch classes at Blossie's. We usually have a ton of giggles and it's so great to see all the different versions of the sketch - very inspiring stuff! I'm also hoping to coordinatea BIG online sketch class later in the year . . .
Thanks for visiting and I'll be back tomorrow with a little giveaway!
